  Overview

A visit to the Southernmost Point in the Continental United States offers little more than the opportunity to say you stood at the Southernmost Point of the Continental United States. It’s almost like a visit to the Grand Canyon, except there’s no incredible views, arid temperatures or an expansive desert. Anyway, the Southernmost Point does offer a few amenities. For one, on a clear day you can just barely make out the silhouette of Cuba emerging from the horizon, as the communist island sits just 90 miles south from here. Second, you can purchase a wide array of overpriced trinkets and other such merchandise, as several vendors crowd the gigantic striped buoy that actually marks the Southernmost Point. Choose from an abundance of conch shells and shell-necklaces---hey, you can say you bought them at the Southernmost Point in the Continental United States! And if that’s not Key West enough, you can purchase one of those southernmost coconuts that are always for sale, which ought to prove a great buy during your flight back home.

Geographically, Key West is a small area, so you can probably even walk to The Point from almost anywhere in town. Of course, there will be fewer tourists here in the morning rather than the afternoon. Good luck finding a local hanging out here that isn’t selling anything. The Southernmost Point is located at the end of Whitehead Street -- the south end, that is.
